Accreditation is a process, as a result of which an official confirmation is obtained that the quality of the services provided meets the relevant requirements.  Accreditation is most common in the provision of professional services, for assessing the quality of which the consumer, as a rule, does not have sufficient competencies.

In terms of conformity assessment, accreditation applies to test, calibration and calibration laboratories, certification bodies and inspection bodies, generally referred to as conformity assessment bodies.  Accreditation in the field of conformity assessment is the procedure for the official recognition by the accreditation body of the competence of the applicant (conformity assessment body) to perform work in a certain area of conformity assessment.  Accreditation of the laboratory, certification body or inspection body means sufficiently strict verification of the competence of technical personnel to carry out certain activities, assessment of management systems for this activity, and verification of the availability of necessary equipment and techniques.
